458 | Interesting advertisement in American Advocate Oct 1816 This advertisement appeared on October 19, 1816. It would be interesting to know the story behind it. In October 1816, Holmes Daggett was 23 years old, having lived in Farmington since he was about 17. He had been married to 32 year old Mary Hartson Smith for about a year, and they had a 2 month old infant son. Ebenezer Sweet was 72 years old and a prominent citizen in Farmington who had lived there for over 30 years. He is mentioned several times in "A history of Farmington, Franklin County, Maine: from the earliest explorations to the present time, 1776-1885", including the following passage: "He was a tanner by trade...Mr. Sweet was a man of industrious habits, and acquired a pecuniary independence." Two other interesting things to note: Ebenezer Sweet was married to Desire Daggett, a distant cousin of Holmes Daggett. And in 1813, Ebenezer Sweet appears in the records of the Kennebec County Supreme Judicial Court as a defendant in a Debt case. | |||
