- ed. note: Regarding the surname of Casimir's wife Catherine
In the book "A Family Called Wild", privately published in 1989, Casimir Wild's wife is identified as Catherine Foist (1828-1892). No other details are provided about her and there is no information regarding her parents or origins.
For many years, I identified Casimir's wife on this site as "Catherine Foist", per "A Family Called Wild". However, in 2010, I received some records from the archivist in Goderich, Ontario that identified Casimir's wife as "Catherine Vogt". Specifically:
- From Casimir's obituary in the local newspaper, written in 1904: "He was born in Germany in the year 1827 and when twenty five years of age came to Ontario and settled in Waterloo county where he married Catharine Vogt..."
- From local birth records, 1870: A daughter was born on 17 June to Cassimir Wild, farmer, and Catherine Vogt.
I was surprised to receive this information, but after reviewing it, I realized that the only authority that I had for the surname Foist was "A Family Called Wild". So I went ahead and changed Catherine's surname on this site from Foist to Vogt. I recalled that Joseph Wild's first wife was Maria Crescentia Vogt, born in Aschhausen, Germany. I had to wonder whether Joseph and Casimir, who did so many other things in parallel throughout their lives, married a pair of sisters.
The plot thickens: Catherine Wild's headstone states that she died 18 Jan 1892, aged 64 yrs 1 mo & 23 dys. This works out to a birth date of 25 Nov 1827. I joined Ancestry.com in 2012 and discovered a record in the Wuerttemberg, Germany Emigration Index for a Katharina Vogt, born in Auschhausen on 25 Nov 1827. The coincidence in birth date -- together with the information from the archivist -- is compelling evidence that Casimir's wife's maiden name was Vogt, not Foist. And by the way, Maria Crescentia Vogt appears on Ancestry.com in the same set of emigration records as Katharina, born in Auschhausen on the birth date given for her in "A Family Called Wild".
