Interesting coincidence: Peter O'Sullivan and Bridgid Brown were Peter Frances Alexander Etue's Great Grandparents on his maternal side. They were Peter's mother; Mary Lillian Wild's maternal grandparents. Coincidentally Peter Frances Alexander Etue and his first wife; Shirley Sandra Dingle were married in St Joseph's Church Stratford, Ontario, 107 years, 2 months later on Saturday 24 Apr 1965, the same church as Peter O'Sullivan & Bridgid Brown were married in.

      Bridgid Brown and Peter O'Sullivan
      ------------------------------------------------------------
Bridgid apparently came to Canada with her parents, followed her mother and brothers to the Perth County area, and there met and married Peter O'Sullivan. Peter was the son of Patrick and Johanna (McGrath) O?Sullivan from Irishtown, as the St.Columban area was known in the early and mid-1850's. After Bridgid and Peter's marriage, they lived on the First Concession of McKillop Township, Huron County, just west of the main area of St. Columban. All of their eleven children were baptized in the St. Columban Church, and Bridgid and Peter are buried in the church cemetery. One of the daughters, Margaret, married, moved to North Dakota, and had a family born there. Another daughter, Catherine, married, and eventually moved to the
state of Washington. A son, Joe, died relatively young in Detroit, Michigan. Some of the rest of the family married and lived in Ontario. There are a number of O'Sullivan's
buried in the St. Columban Cemetery.
In 2008, John and Shirley Mecke, following up leads from an old newspaper obituary, contacted Sister Dolores O'Sullivan, the youngest daughter of James O'Sullivan and Teresa Gallagher and a granddaughter of Bridgid Brown and Peter O'Sullivan. Sister Dolores was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph and living in their retirement home in London, Ontario. She was the last living of the seventeen children of James and Teresa, and was very helpful in not only providing information about her family's history, but also information about other descendants of her grandparents.
Through Sister, I contacted, and have corresponded with Peter Etue, a great-grandson of Bridgid and Peter O'Sullivan. Peter is responsible for maintaining the "Canadian" part of a very well done family history website on a branch of his family. Between visits with Sister, her prayer cards and old newspaper obits and Peter's
correspondence we now know something about 135 or so descendants of Bridgid and Peter O'Sullivan.

      Generation 1
      1. BRIDGID1 BROWN was born about Abt. June 26, 1834 in Ballyhahill, County Limerick, Ireland1-3. She died on April 27, 1918 in Lot 12, Concession 1, McKillop Township, Huron
County, Ontario, Canada4. She married Peter O'Sullivan, son of Patrick O'Sullivan and Johanna McGrath, on February 15, 1858 in St. Joseph's Church, Stratford, Ontario, Canada5. He was born between 1825-1832 in Ireland1-2, 6. He died on March 10, 1907 in Lot 12, Concession 1, McKillop Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada2, 6. Bridgid Brown was baptized on July 06, 1834 in Shanagolden Parish, most likely at the Church of Our Lady of the Visitation, Ballyhahill, County Limrick, Ireland3. Baptismal Sponsors: July 06, 1834 (Anna Connors and Patrick Walsh3) She lived in Ellice Township, Perth County, Ontario, Canada in 18585. She lived in Lot 12, Concession 1, McKillop Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada in 1911 (living with her son and his
family.). Death Informant: April 27, 1918 (James O'Sullivan2) Death Record: April 29, 1918 in McKillop Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada; #0207592 She was buried on April 30, 1918 in St. Columban Cemetery, St. Columban, Ontario, Canada4, 7. Her cause of death was Pneumonia for 3 days; atheroma, old age for several years; Dr. C. McKay2. She was also known as Bridget8.

Notes for Bridgid Brown: Bridgid apparently came to Canada with her parents, followed her mother and brothers to the Perth County area, and there met and married Peter O'Sullivan. Peter was the son of Patrick and Johanna (McGrath) O'Sullivan from Irishtown, as the St. Columban
area was known in the early and mid 1850's. After Bridgid and Peter's marriage, they lived on the First Concession of McKillop Township, Huron County, just west of the main area of St. Columban. All of their children were baptized in the St. Columban Church, and Bridgid and Peter are buried in the
church cemetery. Little more was originally known of the descendants of this family. During the winter of 2003 contact was made with the descendants of one of Peter's younger sisters, a Bridget O'Sullivan who had married William John Nash. Bridget and William John had married in St. Columban in 1863, and had eleven children born in
McKillop Township. William and Bridget Nash and their entire family left Ontario, Canada around 1900, moving to Montana, and claimed a homestead in the Gallatin Valley section of the state. Many of the descendants of this family today live in the Bozeman, Montana and Los Angeles, California areas. The following Bridget O'Sullivan obituary, was received from Barbara Valino in July 2007. Barbara is a great-granddaughter of Edward Brown, and the obituary most likely appeared in a local paper at the time of Bridget's death.
      Mrs. Bridget Brown
One of the very few remaining pioneers of the Huron Tract passed away at her home in McKillop on Saturday, April 27, in the person of Bridget Brown, widow of the late Peter O'Sullivan, at the good age of 88 years. Mrs. O'Sullivan was born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1835, but came to Canada with her father, brothers and sisters in the year 1850, the family first settled in Caledonia. The following year they moved to Stratford and in 1854 settled in Kinkora, where on February 14th, 1858, she was married to the late Peter O'Sullivan. Immediately after the marriage the young couple went to McKillop and settled on

Lot 12, on the Huron Road, three and a half miles from Seaforth, where she continued to reside until her death. She was a most estimable women, kind and loving in the home and a true and helping neighbor. In religion she was a faithful and devout member of St. Columban Catholic church, where the funeral services were held on Tuesday, high mass being celebrated by the pastor, Rev. Father Burke and the remains were interred in the family plot in St. Columban cemetery; the funeral being one of the largest ever held in the section, there being 115 carriages in the procession, which amply testified to the esteem in which she was held during her long residence in the township. Mr. O'Sullivan died on March 10, 1917, but from a family of nine children, three sons and five daughters survive: Miss Mary at home, Mrs. James O'Connell, Stratford; Mrs. Frank Farrel, Fargo, N.D.; Mrs. Valentine Wild, Bayfield; Mrs. James A. Downey, of Vancouver, Washington; Peter, the well known cattle buyer; James, on the homestead, and John, Buffalo, N.Y..
In the summer of 2008, John and Shirley Mecke contacted Sister Dolores O'Sullivan, the youngest daughter of James O'Sullivan and Teresa Gallagher. John Mecke is a grandson of Jim Brown, who owned and operated the Kinkora store from the 1920's through the early 1950's, and the great-grandson of Robert and Margaret
      Shannahan Brown.
Sister Dolores was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph and living in their retirement home in London, Ontario. She was the last living of the seventeen children of James and Teresa, and was very helpful in not only providing information about her family's history, but also information about other descendants of her grandparents, Peter O'Sullivan and Bridgid Brown.
Peter O'Sullivan lived in McKillop Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada, living with his parents and siblings in 185123. He lived in Irishtown, Huron County, Ontario, Canada
in 18585. He was counted in the census in 1861 in Census Place: McKillop Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada; Occupation: Yeoman24. He was counted in the census in 1881 in Census Place: McKillop, Huron County Centre, Ontario; Occupation: Farmer9. He was buried on March 12, 1907 in St. Columban Cemetery, St. Columban, Ontario,
Canada4. Death Record: March 12, 1907 in McKillop Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada; #0143792 His cause of death was Malignant disese of the prostrate for one year; Dr. J. McGinnis2. Witnesses to Wedding: (Anna Kelly and Jacob Carpenter5) Priest: (Fr. Peter Francis Crinnon5.

  • Notes
    • Lake Road East, Sauble Line, Bluewater Highway 21 Lot 1 East part: Joseph Wild, born in 1825 in Germany, came to Canada in 1846. He came to Stanley Township in 1847 and obtained his deed to the farm shortly after. His wife, Freda Bickle was born in Germany in 1835. They were Roman Catholic. Part of their house was built in 1870 and was added on to in 1898 (some 28 years later).
Valentine took possession in 1900. Valentine married Bridget Agnes O'Sullivan in 1907. Following Valentine's passing, Agnes took over the farm in 1929. In 1948 the farm was passed to their son John P. Wild and his wife Anne Bedard. Anne was born in Zurich, Ontario. The farm was passed to Joseph Peter Wild in 1986. This farm has been in the family for well over a century, some 168 years in Dec 2015.

    • Bridget Agnes O'Sullivan gave birth to her first child on 30 Sep 1908, a daughter Mary Lillian Wild. Fifty-one years later Bridget Agnes O'Sullivan died on 30 Sep 1959. She lived for 84 years, 4 months and 16 days. Her wake was held at the Wild homestead farm just south of Bayfield Friday 02 Oct 1959 and funeral Saturday 03 Oct 1959. My father Anthony Etue, stepmother Dorothy, sister Betty and Peter went to the wake on Friday 02 Oct 1959 at the farm stone house the night before the funeral. Peter was to be a pallbearer, however the next morning my father Anthony decided we were not going to the funeral! It was more important to stay at home and spread topsoil on the lawn! Agnes was the only grandparent Peter had known in his life as her husband Valentine died in 1928 and both my paternal grandparents Alexander & Emelie Etue died in 1943. Big disappointment for Peter @ age 18!
